Band Photography – Ricoh GRii with flash.
Yes, new Ricoh GRiii camera is already announced and I saw a few reviews about the new features of the new version like a touch screen and 24MP huge APS-C sensor. And one “feature” made me a little bit sad – the lack of flash in the new camera. Now I’m not sure if I will want to have this new one ever – even presence of the new in-body image stabilization can’t help – I do not feel it unnecessary for me exactly like to have this touch screen.
Today I continue the theme of my previous post about using Ricoh GRii pocket camera with a built-in flash during live performance events. Band photography is my special love. I use the same techniques and skills I got when I learned street photography and was in love with the genre – a fast reaction on what is happening around, knowing your gear habits and to being everywhere at once. In the first days of using Ricoh at night, I photographed in the same way as with my DSLR – high ISO, shutter priority fixed on 1/60-1/125, but I always wanted to see what I can do with the built-in flash and much more slower shutter. I made a preset with an ISO 100, shutter speed 1/2-1/6 (depend on the amount of ambient light), first curtain flash and manually prefocused lens – 1-3m, depending on the situation.
As you can see, the results I got are slightly different from the results created early by DSLR, but I also used a different technique. I love these strange lighting effects I got in my images – after all, I don’t pretend to be another Bruce Gilden, but I’m going to improve the flash photography technique with the goal to make something interesting and new, at last, new for me.

thank you Paula !
I like zour photo. I love romance. And Umbrellas. Even you.
These are wonderful Victor, you should do more of these. The list streaks from the long shutter and / or slow sync flash add so much. ♥️
Great photos, Victor! The trails of light are so vivid and give the photos a wonderful sense of movement. Well done!
thank you Michael.
