Types of housing – the magic triangle (series of analog images).
I always interested to know how people find the places for their permanent housing (well, what is permanent in our life). For some of us, or for most of us, it’s very simple to say – here I prefer to stay for some period of my life, or even forever. Sounds like “catholic marriage” for many, who don’t usually agree to long commitments, sign documents for long-term housing, for a long stay in some randomly selected location that at first sight looks and feels like heaven but became the HELL after a few days, weeks, months or years – choose your amount of time. I asked many people why do they live in some specific place. What or who influenced their choice. Not many could answer properly or had a crystal clear idea, why exactly some specific place or why the too long period of time to stuck an the place that does not really meet the requirements. Sadly, but most people just don’t have the patience to move from place to place dragging acquired property half (half???) of which is, in principle, unnecessary junk that is a pity to throw away. I really envy nomads and their independence from this unnecessary stuff. Their easy (???) but light movement from place to place and the wonderful possibility to try every place without any need for commitments and promises will stop forever.
And now I am smoothly moving from philosophy to photography. This series was photographed during the month of July in 4 different places – in 3 geographic locations. Jerusalem, Haifa, and the village of my living that is located exactly in the middle between two big cities. I’m starting this photo essay from Jerusalem (of course), after that, I move to Haifa located in the northern part of the country, after this a few shots from the garden of the place of my living and finally a few shots from the definitively permanent location of stay.
Here the Jerusalem as promised above.
St. John the Baptist’s Greek Orthodox Church in Haifa, Wadi Nisnas area.
Still in Haifa, some very ugly but lovely for photography location also close to the Wadi Nisnas neighborhood and this beautiful building in the middle of the open air market of the wadi.
I few details from the sunny garden of my living place in the village in central part.
The last part is the most silent place that dwellers never chose. Mamilla Cemetery is an almost destroyed cemetery where people and soldiers of different nationalities were buried from the years 1019–1020 till the 20th century. One day I will visit this place again with the goal to bring some more detailed images of the sarcophagus still located there.
Nice images. What are you shooting on? These look like 6×4.5 to me… ?
Hey Matt. thank you for the kind words. I stopped to write about the used equipment if my posts are not about this equipment. But i always use the proper categories and tags to explain what equipment i used. This time it was Fuji GA645 and ilford HP5 film that i exposed EI320 and developed in d-76 as 400.
Ah, thank you. I scanned through the post before asking, but I don’t usually pay attention to tags. I’ll pay attention to them on your posts now I know you use them this way.
Thank you i see. I find a lot of information in these tags in the posts when i have to know a little bit more. From another side nothing can be better them the real conversation like we are talking now. Ask me everything if you still love to know something.not written here. About this camera – its amazing even fully electrical and usually i prefer a fully mechanical stuff
I know what you mean: I use a Pentax 645… I really like it, but I can’t help but want something more fully mechanical. I don’t need it, just want it.
I have a 35mm Pentax p30t and a Canon FT QL, and the fully mechanical Canon gets far more use.
Loved , as per always, this series. Your eye for what matters is so admirable
Thank you for the kind words Paula. i always feel hungry at streets 😉
I love your segway from philosophy to photography. Images should be accompanied by words (in most cases). When I wandered through Berlin I always wondered not only why people live in the places they did but also how. Why some areas are nice and clean, others dirty like no one there cared about the place the call home. Maybe they never did…thinking about they current place as temporary but the temporary became the permanent somehow.
Thank you Paul for the kind words. Even i dont think that every photo should be accomplished by words, but sometimes i have a love to write something that is bother me 😉 Somehow im connecting better with the less fancy and shiny places because of the feeling that more natural and simple people are living in these places and not the fake emotions hiding behind the shiny windows 😉
Fascinating series! I also always enjoy reading your introductions . Hell yes you’ve nailed it . I came to USA with one suitcase and now? Piled up with unnecessary junks which I kept telling myself to get rid of them tomorrow ..now seems to me tomorrow is forever hahaha.. yeah I don’t like fancy shiny buildings which… to me didn’t give me warmness . I must be crazy:):)
Huge thank you darling. Same about me. i moved to this country with my small family ( i already was married ) just with a few suitcases. I left everything in Kazakhstan – the place were i spend 27 years of my previous life. And i had everything what i needed for this moment. I love to throw away junk and pre-junk. 😉 i will write about this in one of my next posts 😉
Haha! Look forward to see and read your next series! Guess who’s gonna clean all the junks first hahaha but women has loads of junks!
Im living alone so my junk is only my 😉
hahaha!! How is the safety ? I really want to visit Jerusalem. If not this year then next year..
You’re very welcome. The safety is ok right now.
Great work Victor! The village series has a certain charm about them. Good luck with this project, it’s a fascinating subject.
Thank you Yuri. These village objects are less or more similar to the whole big series i photographed for my qurantine zine that i finished and even uploaded to Blurb but declined the idea even to run the test bcause of their very high shipping. ;-(
It would be a shame not to print your project. Hope you find a good alternative to Blurb!
Agree with you. Have no idea right now were to search.
Hi Victor, outstanding set of images! As always your composition and framing is top notch!
